Silence!

Have you ever been in silence? I’ve realized it is hard to be in complete silence in Dallas, as large as it is.

I remember staying at a friend’s house in the tiny city of Nowhere, Ala. It’s directly between the cities of Wrongturn and Lost.

It was silent there. If you have experienced this, you know what I mean when I say my ears were ringing because of the profound silence.

Your thoughts can easily overwhelm you in a place like that.

When I returned home, I felt as though I had been on a different plane of existence.

Elijah once heard the voice of the Lord tell him to stand on a mountainside and wait. A strong wind came by, then an earthquake and finally a great fire. God’s voice was in none of these events. We are told that there was a “sound of sheer silence.”

It was in this moment that God spoke to Elijah.

When we cleanse ourselves of all the unnecessary sounds of this place and become immersed into a sound of silence, we too may hear God’s voice.

If you think your life is too busy to find this silence, Elijah would disagree with you. After all, he had the Israelites seeking his own life, and he still found silence.

What keeps you from finding silence? Where can you insert silence into your life? Could it be when you are jogging? How about gardening?

This week, look and listen for your place of silence.
