Vaccines offered at Wilshire on Sunday, Oct. 12
By Linda Garner, Parish Nurse

Flu season is approaching, and it is time to think about getting a flu shot.

Trinity Pharmacy will provide immunizations at Wilshire on Sunday, Oct. 12. They will be located in James Gallery from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Available immunizations will include flu vaccine for children from 6 months of age through senior adults. Flumist, the nasal vaccine for those 5 through 49 years of age, and preservative-free vaccine as well as pneumonia, tetanus and pertussis vaccines will also be available.

Costs are $25 for flu vaccines, $40 for the pneumonia vaccine, $35 for Flumist, $40 for tetanus and $65 for pertussis.

Two new features have been added this year. A consent form, which is necessary for each person receiving a vaccine, will be available prior to the scheduled clinic. Look for forms in Sunday School rooms and in the church office or print one from the church’s Web site. Also, credit cards will be accepted for payment in addition to Medicare Part B, Railroad Medicare Part B, Secure Horizons, cash or check.

While most children stay up to date with immunizations because of school requirements and the emphasis of children’s health-care givers, adults do not always recognize which immunizations are important after childhood. Recommendations for adults include influenza each year, pneumonia every five years and tetanus every 10 years. Tetanus needs to be combined with diphtheria and/or diphtheria and pertussis. There has been an increase of pertussis in the past few years that can be easily prevented in individuals who are immunized.

The vaccine for herpes zoster, better known as shingles, is recommended for most adults 60 years of age and older. The vaccine is expensive; however, many Medicare Part D plans will pay for a part of the cost.

Doses of this vaccine may be available through city and county health departments, retail pharmacies and physicians’ offices. Currently, there is a nationwide back order for this vaccine. Some have been able to get the vaccine from the City of Dallas immunizations office, where it has been made available through a grant.

SMITH-Dennis

Dennis Smith was born in and grew up in Tyler. A self-confessed nerd, he excelled in science and mathematics, but believed if he were a good Christian, he would become a missionary (his father’s brother was a missionary to Brazil).
