When I made the trek to Waco to attend Truett Seminary, I was excited about the moving theological books I was going to be able to read. My zeal was slightly broken when Schleiermacher was my daunting task! (If you think the name is difficult to pronounce, try reading one of his books.)
I stuck with my academic readings, and one theological masterpiece made a huge impact, Saint Augustine's Confessions. It surprised me how engrossed I became with a work that was written 16 centuries ago. When you take the time to understand Augustine's cultural perspective, you will soon find yourself empathizing with the author's deep pains, joys and awakenings.
It is a book of conversion, but also a beautiful poem written to God. Persevere with the book, and I think you will find the results satisfying.
