About Wilshire Student Ministry

youthcamp-4.jpgWilshire "youth" are teenagers in grades 7-12, and currently represent more than 30 different schools in the Dallas area.

Wilshire's Student Ministry offers opportunities for learning, discussion, sharing, traveling, singing, missions, etc.  Oh, and also just plain fun or hanging out. Some things are offered every week and some on an annual basis.

Sunday School is the center and beginning point for all student ministry at Wilshire. All youth meet together in the Youth Center at 9:40 a.m. on Sundays, then break into smaller classes by grade.

During the school year, there's also Youth Choir on Sundays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All seventh through 12th graders are welcome to sing in Youth Choir; no audition is necessary. Youth Choir is directed by Dr. Jeff Brummel. This year, the Paradiso youth dialogue lead by Student Minister Darren DeMent will immediately follow Youth Choir rehearsal, also in Choral Hall, at 5:00 p.m. It is open to all seventh to 12th graders whether or not they are in Youth Choir. Rehearsals for Shekinah, the select youth ensemble, will run from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Also during the school year, youth gather for the Watershed Bible study Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Youth Center. youthcamp-1.jpg

Wilshire's annual Youth Camp is the biggest week of the year. We load up a couple of buses and take youth in grades 7 through 12 to a week of camp designed just for Wilshire. It’s not someone else’s camp that we become a small part of; it’s our own fun-filled week of recreation, Bible study, learning, playing and having a great time.

Youth Choir mission tour: This week-long tour is the icing on the cake for Youth Choir members who earn Frequent Singer Points throughout the year. The 65-voice choir travels to destinations mainly within the continental United States for a week of singing and service. Recent destinations have included Memphis, Tenn.; Boston; New Orleans; Chicago; and New Mexico. In 2010, the youth took their first international trip to the Dominican Republic. In 2011, the youth choir went to Atlanta, Georgia. The youth choir traveled to Chicago in June 2012. In 2013, the tour was to Nashville, Tennessee. In 2014, the youth choir traveled to Los Angeles, Calif. In 2015, the youth choir traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2016, the Youth Choir traveled to Washington, D.C. In 2017, the choir will travel to New Orleans, La.

Spring Retreat: We have taken the best elements of DiscipleNow and fall retreat and combined them to create this exciting new event.

youthcamp-3.jpgFall retreat: Each fall, the youth group takes a weekend retreat to a nearby camp to get away from the hassles of school and commitments and focus on a spiritual theme.

Youth Choir Mini-Tour: Each fall, the youth choir takes a weekend get-away to have fun, but also rehearse and sing at another church in Texas.
