Classes meet at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
One size doesn’t fit all in adult Sunday School at Wilshire. Especially if you are new to Wilshire, we encourage you to try on several classes until you find the right fit.
Most classes, unless noted, include both men and women, couples and singles. Although general age ranges are given, people of all ages are welcome to participate in any class.
Koinonia - Room 3203
Open to all ages, this class focuses on in-depth biblical and theological studies. Taught by Joe Haag, the class will read through the Gospel of Matthew using David Garland's commentary, Reading Matthew: A Literary and theological Commentary as the text. Using both an academic and spiritual approach, the class will go deep into Matthew with a comprehensive understanding of its place amidst scripture.
Compass - Room 3103
A curriculum committee plans lessons with input from members, creating a mix of Bible study and topical studies related to Wilshire’s mission of “building a community of faith shaped by the Spirit of Jesus Christ.” Class members range in age from their 40s to 80s and enjoy vigorous discussion on almost every issue, believing rigid conformity to dogma is not the message of Jesus Christ.
Whosoever Wilshire - Room 3105
Diverse life experiences characterize this blended group of married and single adults, ranging in age from the 50’s to early 70’s. Creative teachers offer a wide range of learning opportunities using various curricula and Bible-based studies. Lessons are led by visiting teachers and occasionally by members of the class.
Bright Fellowship - Room 3206
This long-standing class of active couples and singles in their 60s and 70s, reflects two Wilshire characteristics—diversity and inclusiveness. Lessons are all Bible based using Smyth & Helwys curriculum, taught by Preston Bright.
Charlie's Angels - Room 2365
Ranging in age from 60s to 90s, this class is an active group of senior adults. Lessons are drawn from Smyth & Helwys curriculum and are taught by Coyle Stephenson and
Open Bible - Room 3301
Taught by Craig Keith, this large class is made up of three decades of senior adults in their 60s, 70s and 80s, with a mixture of members married and single. However, learners of all ages are welcome. Lessons are based on books of the Bible and include reading from Scripture, presentation of Bible commentary and spirited group discussion.
Harmony Department - is a welcoming, traditional-style Sunday school department for senior adults. The department includes five classes that meet together in McIver Chapel for a brief opening assembly before adjourning to individual classrooms.
Friendship - Room 1205-G
A class for women mainly in their 80s and 90s, Friendship offers lively discussion and fellowship, with lessons drawn from the Smyth & Helwys curriculum. The class is taught in rotation by Carol Smith, Linda James and Jeri Baker.
Lee Russell - Room 1205-H
Women in their 70s and 80s share a special bond in this class. The class uses topical Bible study and is taught by Lee Russell.
Peace - Room 1100-C
The caring women of Peace Class are mostly in their 80s and 90s. Weekly lessons follow the Smyth & Helwys curriculum and are taught by rotating teachers Karalyn Thames, Lynn Hamon, Ann Tucker and Joanne Niemann. Members willingly share their life experiences and biblical faith to create rich times of study.
J.W. Naul - Room 1100-D
This smaller class is for senior adult men, mainly in their 80s and 90s. The class uses Smyth & Helwys curriculum. J.W. Naul has been teaching the class for over 40 years.
Redeemers - Room 1100-B
Joe Allen teachers this co-ed class for senior adults, most in their 70s and 80s. The class uses Smyth & Helwys curriculum.
