Carolyn Shapard has been minister to adults at Wilshire since June 1997. Previously, she was assistant director of capital projects at Southern Methodist University; an associate with the Whitney Smith Co. in Fort Worth, Texas; worked in community ministry at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth; held various positions at Texas Christian University; was a social worker and specialist on aging with the Wake County Department of Social Services in Raleigh, N.C.; and was a special education teacher in Chapel Hill, N.C.
At Wilshire, she directs the weekly program of Bible study for young adults, median adults and senior adults, working with a team of division-level coordinators and volunteer teachers and directors. She also coordinates the church's Women's Ministry, Hospitality Ministry, Companions in Christ and Encouragement Ministry, and she supervises the Wilshire library.
She earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in education (1966) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds a certificate in lay theology through the Baptist Laity Institute and has been certified as a trainer for the Companions in Christ curriculum of The Upper Room.
Shapard is active within the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship as a seminar leader and resource to other churches. Her passions include teaching, administration and organizing. She also serves as co-leader of Wilshire's strategic plan emphasis on outreach and evangelism.
She and her husband, Charlie, have been married since 1964 and have three adult sons.
