Volunteer Opportunities Inside Wilshire

Adam's Baskets
Wilshire members support a food pantry with a monthly collection of food items. This in-gathering is collected every second Sunday of the month, but donations may be made anytime. The food is collected in wicker baskets located in the hallways of the church. The ministry is in memory of Adam Malcik and coordinated by members of the Compass Class.

Adult Sunday School Teachers
It takes dozens of volunteer teachers to make Wilshire's expansive Sunday School structure operate every week. Some of these teachers are full time, meaning they teach the same class every week. But others are part-time teachers who rotate responsibilities with others in a class.

Baptism Ministry Team
This small team of volunteers helps prepare for baptismal services and assists baptismal candidates the day of their baptisms.

Bereavement Ministry Team
This group of volunteers provides food and hospitality for families on the day of funeral services at Wilshire. There are opportunities to serve as hosts and to provide food without being present for the meal itself.

Blood Reserve Ministry Team
These volunteers plan and staff Wilshire's quarterly blood drives. Duties include calling regular donors to remind them of upcoming drives, enlisting new donors and assisting with various tasks on the day of the blood drive.

Care Teams Ministry
When people have specific needs due to difficult life circumstances, Wilshire has a means of creating care teams to surround them with love and practical support. Care Teams volunteers may offer specific skills (such as legal aid or handyman skills) or may just be willing to give of their time as needed.

Children's Teachers
A cadre of volunteers make the Bible come to life for children on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings through Wilshire's Sunday School, missions and choir programs.

Cooking Ministry
Wilshire's Cooking Ministry prepares food on a quarterly or as needed basis in Wilshire's kitchen. Food lovers and home cooks gather to prepare and freeze food. This frozen food is then distributed to those in crises, facing a sudden loss or recovering from surgery. If you don't enjoy cooking, there is still a way for you to be involved. You can write an encouraging note to accompany the food or volunteer to deliver food as needed.

Encouragement Ministry Team
This is a ministry with no meetings! Volunteers agree to write notes of encouragement throughout the year, a task that can be done from home.

Extended Teaching Care (during worship services)
Volunteers provide extended child care for preschoolers during both the 8:30 and 11:00 Sunday morning services. This is a great way to help young parents be able to attend worship and know that their children are in good hands.

Health Ministry Team
These volunteers work with Wilshire's parish nurse, to address health education and enrichment needs within the congregation.

Home Visitation Ministry Team
These loving volunteers make personal visits to Wilshire's homebound members at least once a quarter. They also may write notes of encouragement or make phone calls to stay in touch with those in the congregation who no longer can make it out to church.

Hospitality Ministry Team
Sometimes known as "greeters," these volunteers provide a welcoming presence at every door to the church on Sunday mornings. Service is on a rotation basis.

Lord's Supper Ministry Team
This small team of volunteers prepares the elements for monthly observances of the Lord's Supper.

Prayer Ministry Team
During each of the two Sunday morning worship services, volunteers staff a prayer room to pray for the current needs of the congregation. In addition to praying for an ongoing list of needs, these volunteers receive prayer cards submitted during morning worship.

Preschool Teachers
Loving volunteers are needed to care for and teach preschoolers on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. From bed babies to kindergarteners, Wilshire's preschoolers brighten the lives of all who care for them.

Transportation Ministry Team
These volunteers drive Wilshire's church bus on Sunday mornings to pick up congregants from C.C. Young and Three Fountains retirement facilities.

Ushers Ministry Team
A diverse group of congregants is sought to greet worshippers on Sunday mornings, hand out visitor cards and take the offering. Ushers also are needed for special services.

Video Ministry Team
A newly developing ministry at Wilshire uses volunteers to videotape worship services for rebroadcast on the church's video site.
