Wilshire’s student ministry is unique in two ways:
First, we draw junior high and high school students from at least 15 high school attendance zones, ranging from Lakewood and Lake Highlands to Garland, Irving, Plano, Richardson and many private schools.
Second, the Wilshire Student Ministry doesn’t dumb down the gospel message for youth. We consider teenagers to be capable of exploring deep truths of the Bible and the Christian life, and our programming engages both the mind and the spirit. That’s not to say our student ministry isn’t fun; it is. But we’re not about drawing the largest crowd we can with the latest fun fad or gimmick.
Sunday School is the beginning point of the journey for youth. We offer unique classes for every grade level—classes taught by committee and passionate teachers who love youth. Sunday School meets at 9:40 on Sunday mornings in the Youth Center.
Sunday afternoons bring a majority of Wilshire’s active youth back together for Youth Choir and a youth-oriented worship and study time called Paradiso. With nearly 80 active members, Wilshire’s Youth Choir is one of the largest—and we think best—youth choirs around. The choir sings monthly in Sunday morning worship, engages in local missions outreach and takes an annual mission choir tour. We provide a snack supper between Youth Choir (4:45 to 6 p.m.) and Paradiso (6:15 to 7 p.m.). Paradiso engages body, mind and spirit in topical discussions, singing and group interaction.
Wilshire youth gather on Wednesday evenings for Watershed, a thoughtful, high-energy time for worship and fellowship. Watershed begins at 6:30, and youth and their families are invited to enjoy dinner beforehand at Koinonia Café.
Other season activities round out the youth calendar, including the DiscipleNow weekend in the winter, fall retreat, summer missions activities in the community and more.
