Local Mission Partners:
CitySquare is renewing hope in Dallas by addressing the root causes of poverty, hunger, health and housing. Volunteer opportunities are endless at CitySquare, from helping in their thrift store or food pantry to being a mentor or financial coach.
Cornerstone Baptist Church
Cornerstone has been ministering to the South Dallas/Fair Park community for more than 40 years through a variety of programming that meets the needs of their neighbors. They offer hot meals five days a week and a shower and clothing closet to those experiencing homelessness, and education initiatives to vulnerable children and youth. Cornerstone also operates a Care Center, which is a renovated 11-unit apartment complex. Volunteer with Cornerstone’s children and youth programs or sign a group up to serve in their clothing closet or kitchen.
Gaston Christian Center
Wilshire is a founding partner with Gaston Oaks Baptist Church in what now has become the Gaston Christian Center, located at Greenville Avenue and Royal Lane. Housed under one roof are seven congregations and a variety of faith-based social service and education organizations. Gaston Christian Center is truly a multi-ethnic house of worship and service, with more than 1,200 people passing through its doors every week. Opportunities for service include special events, facilities upkeep and being a welcoming presence.
Gateway of Grace
Gateway of Grace, founded by former Wilshire member Samira Izadi Page, is an ecumenical effort to connect Dallas churches and Christians with refugees from around the world who find their way to Dallas and need someone to show them the love of God through service and friendship. Volunteers are needed to assist with transportation, teach English as a Second Language and cultural awareness classes, host baby showers for refugee families, attend and host special events and befriend refugees who are new to Dallas.
Genesis Women's Shelter
Genesis Women’s Shelter provides emergency shelter, safety counseling, play therapy and transitional housing free of charge to women and girls experiencing violence. Engaging in God’s mission through serving alongside mission partners can be as easy as preparing a hot breakfast once a month. Other volunteer opportunities include working with children, assistance with resume writing, special events, clerical/office help and thrift store positions.
Gospel Light Eritrean Church
Wilshire has had a long partnership with this thriving Eritrean congregation which started and met in Wilshire's McIver Chapel for many years. The strong bond between the two congregations continues today, even though Gospel Light now has a building of its own.
Healing Hands Medical and Dental Clinic
Wilshire was a founding supporter of Healing Hands, a charity medical and dental clinic that serves the uninsured Dallas County. This clinic offers volunteer opportunities for doctors, nurses, dentists, hygienists, dieticians and general office personnel.
Interfaith Family Services
Interfaith Family Services provides transitional housing, programs and services to help Dallas-area families living in poverty and homelessness. Volunteer with Interfaith by cleaning an apartment for a new family, or becoming a mentor through EQUIP, an innovative outreach ministry and partnership between Interfaith Family Services and churches focused on preventing family homelessness and promoting accountability and self-sufficiency through faith-based mentoring.
Prison Entrepreneurship Program
Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP) connects the nation’s top executives, entrepreneurs and MBA students with convicted felons to unlock human potential through entrepreneurial passion, education and mentoring. Executive volunteers are needed to mentor and advise program participants through the process of creating and promoting small businesses. Mentors are also highly sought after to help graduates with the re-entry process. Groups also may donate men’s clothing or make dinners for the transitional house. Recently, one of our Wilshire members shared what he learned in prison serving as an executive volunteer.
Reading Partners is a national education nonprofit dedicated to improving students’ reading skills. They work in Title I elementary schools to support students from low-income communities who are reading six months to two-and-a half years below grade-level. Wilshire's location is Mata Montessori where volunteers commit to tutoring individual students one hour a week during the school year.
White Rock Center of Hope
White Rock Center of Hope is an ecumenical organization supported by a coalition of civic groups, corporations, individuals and more than 50 congregations to provide emergency-aid services (including food, clothing rent/utility assistance and some funds for prescriptions) to residents in the East Dallas area. Volunteer opportunities include sorting donations, assisting and greeting clients upon arrival and interviewing clients who are in need of assistance
Wilkinson Center exists to transform the lives of Dallas families by providing pathways to self-sufficiency with dignity and respect. Wilkinson Center provides emergency services to those in need while providing developmental opportunities at the same time. Volunteer opportunities include working in the food pantry, working in the computer lab or helping with career development training, children’s programs or art classes for senior citizens.
State and National Mission Partners:
Wilshire is a strong partner in the state expression of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Working together, like-minded Texas Baptist churches engage in missions, ministry and theological education. Learn more.
Delta Hands for Hope
Delta Hands for Hope is a non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen and enhance local community assets related to education, spiritual development, health and recreation of school-aged children in the Mississippi Delta and surrounding areas. Each year Wilshire sends one or two teams to partner in the work of Delta Hands for Hope. Teams are open to all ages.
CBF Field Personnel Lesley-Ann Hix Tommey and Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries
Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries seeks to encourage the social, educational, spiritual and economic growth of the Hell's Kitchen community (on the west side of midtown Manhattan in New York City), offering non-sectarian, multifaceted educational opportunities and direct services to community residents through partnerships among Metro Baptist Church, area residents, missions organizations and community service providers. Lesley-Ann Hix Tommey partners closely with Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries, offering support and leadership for their programs and investing in the lives of homeless veterans, domestic violence victims and students seeking greater educational opportunities.
Global Mission Partners:
Cooperative Baptist Fellowship
Wilshire's primary partner in global missions is the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Through CBF, Wilshire supports long-term field personnel serving in 30 countries around the world, as well as short-term and volunteer mission teams. Preemptive Love Coalition
Preemptive Love Coalition is a global movement of peacemakers changing the way we engage the world’s most polarizing conflicts by confronting fear with acts of love through life-saving heart surgeries, emergency relief for families victimized by ISIS, empowering grants for small-business owners, educating children, and peacemaking in conflict zones. Wilshire began a partnership with Preemptive Love through a grant given in 2015 that helped fund a heart surgery trip to Iran. Learn more about the impact of that gift.
